I help individuals become more effective, more efficient, and more productive as they shape success within new product development networks

To a large extent, I have found that the outcomes of product development efforts are determined by the skills and motivation of the contributors and the network (team) environment. While others emphasize processes and tools, I strive to improve the skills of individuals and the quality of their interactions within the network that develops these solutions.

  • I work with individual contributors mobilized for new product development. I have developed multiple ways to help individual contributors (such as designers, developers, scientists, engineers, domain experts, and communication specialists) identify success limiting factors and improve the skills needed to improve their performance.
  • I work with leaders to improve the development environment. I have validated multiple ways to optimize development efforts for increased synergy among the traditionally autonomous and often competing disciplines that is imperative for new product success. This means that individuals from different disciplines (such as engineering and marketing) can work more collaboratively with less antagonism.

I have found that this approach is characterized by additional benefits. Projects are completed on-time and on-budget more often than all of the other alternative approaches. Most important, this approach capitalizes on the Principle of Obliquity. Individual contributors that are infused with qualities such as autonomy, mastery, and purpose are certain to develop great products for enthusiastic customers.

Three things that passionate, independent product development contributors want

Are you an individual contributor that strives to improve their skills and contribute to making their team great so that you are certain to deliver a winning product? You are not alone.

I help new product development contributors that need more than summaries about the latest product development fads. I help individual contributors that want to evolve existing processes and validate assumptions.

I can accelerate your learning and answer the following three questions:

  1. How can I become better at my craft?
  2. How can I help my network become great?
  3. How do I get more of my inputs considered in the executive suite when critical plans and decisions are being made about the project, product, and portfolio?

I have been successful empowering individuals that are dedicated to one project and those that are assigned to multiple projects. These skills can be applied if you are part of a group that is co-located (in one room and employees of one company) or if you are part of a dispersed network that contributes asynchronously to a project involving multiple companies.

What leaders of product development need

Are you in a leadership role and tasked with mobilizing a team to develop a new product that is certain to win? You are not alone.

Every leader wants to know how to recognize the efficacious from the inefficient in their context. Every leader has to evolve their answers to inquiries such as "How do I do more with less?" Every leader needs to facilitate ways to close the innovation gap (the delay between wanting a new product and delivering it).

I can improve your ability to:

  1. Promote activities that improve value. Recognize unvalidated inputs that result in excessive waste.
  2. Reduce disciplinary sequencing (delays produced when one group waits for the output of another group)
  3. Apply the appropriate system (holistic view) and the component (reductionist view) emphasis to specific development activities
  4. Increase synergy. Promote harmony. Decrease antagonism among functional groups.

What you can expect from a synergistic approach

I am a new product development (NPD) synergist. I strive to facilitate the conditions that promote the formation of virtuous circles during your current project and your next one. Here is how I could do that for you.

  • Interview your current product development specialists to determine the functionally significant factors that may result in a differential rate of success in NPD
  • Analyze your current NPD framework and make recommendations to improve communication and agility
  • Design and deliver training for your development team that will result in a differential rate of success in NPD
  • Evolve a launch architecture that improves team situation models to improve explicit and implicit coordination.
  • Recommend specific deliberate practice to help specific individual contributors improve their skills and raise the performance of your network
  • Provide recommendations to your leadership team regarding your current project planning, product lifecycle planning, and portfolio planning to promote effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity.
  • Emphasize specific product development principles that endure longer than any best practices or other fads.

I can help you within a consulting, training, coaching, design services, or development services format. I can work with individuals and groups in an hourly, project, or retainer arrangement.
